Can I get your opinion on something? I have a new grammar-teaching book coming up and I want to know if you like this title: Please Don't Teach Grammar with Worksheets!

Other possibility under consideration:
Teaching Grammar with Visuals and Manipulatives

Hi Amy!

It's Lauren Salvatore from Smithtown. I hope you've gotten a chance to check out that restaurant I had suggested back in October. I came up with two possible titles: "Death to Skill and Drill" or "Kill Skill and Drill."

Book titles are tricky. However I wouldn't be drawn to Please don't teach grammar with worksheets because it's a passive message. Something between please and kill would be ideal.

I have to say, and I hope you don't mind, that I think that title is a little boring and you are anything but!!!! Needless to say, the title doesn't reflect the author. Of course we don't know anything about this new book. Who is it intended for?

Amy,

Your second title would grab my attention as a special education teacher knowing I want to teach grammar, but I need my students to experience grammar. As I mentioned last weekend I use worksheets to introduce concepts. For my students it focuses them and builds their confidence, but the learning tended to stop there. We have been using the reading rods all week and having great discussions. I know you probably do not want to hear this but the worksheets were helpful in introducing a concept and giving the students a text to ground their conversations in. As we discussed in class often our students do not have the vocabulary for the ideas floating in their minds. For my class this year the combination of worksheets, manipulative, and conversations are producing meaningful grammar learning that is transferring into some of their own writing. We are still struggling with the daily edits.

I like the second title better. It's sounds more positive... like it would give suggestions.
